FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you need to know a little more?
Here are our FAQs…
How do I apply?
To be considered for a studio at Jamaica Street Studios, you need to provide us with some information and be added to the waiting list. You can add yourself by submitting an application form here.
What happens next?
Once you have submitted your application form online, you will be automatically added to the waiting list. You won’t get a confirmation email, but don’t worry, we will have received your information.
You will not hear from us unless we would like to invite you to interview for a studio, or to ask you if you would like to stay on the waiting list.
I am not a painter, can I still apply?
Of course you can!
We don't just support one kind of artist. Diversity of practice is a really key value of the studio, and is considered when we choose people from the waiting list to interview.
How do you choose people?
When we are choosing artists from the waiting list, we choose them based on how appropriate the studio is for their practice and then how diverse their practice is in relation to our current artists. We will choose the first people on the waiting list that tick both these boxes. For example, being first on the waiting list doesn't necessarily mean you will get picked to be interviewed, because that artist might need a larger studio than we currently have on offer.
How often do studios become available?
It is really hard to tell when a studio is going to become available. It really varies. There isn't a pattern. It really depends on when an artist decides to leave the studio. To be transparent, because a studio here is very sought after and because there are a considerable lack of studio spaces available in the city - it isn’t very regular that a studio becomes available. We would still very much encourage you to add yourself to the waiting list. We do get artists subletting their studios more regularly, and you can only be considered for a sublet if you are on the waiting list.
What size is a studio?
All the studios are different sizes. We have three floors and each floor has a different vibe, and each studio offer is quite different. This is why we are more interested in asking you what you are looking for. The size of a studio always depends on what actually becomes available.
Please note, the studios are the 1st - 3rd floors, accessed by a staircase only. We regret that we cannot currently adequately support wheelchair users and those for whom stairs are a barrier.
How much do they cost?
The cost of each studio is different. It depends on the size of the studio. Studio space is calculated by approx £11 per square meter.
Can I come view the studios?
Unfortunately we do not offer studio viewings. We only offer studio viewings to those who are invited to interview. This is because our studio manager is our only employed person at the studios. They work two days a week, and don't have capacity to undertake all the requests for viewings.
