Ruth Ander

biography

BA (Hons) in Illustration at the University of the West of England

Ruth has continued to evolve and hone her unique monoprint technique, which she uses to great effect to convey the light of sea and land. Her pictures are delicate, translucent drifts of colour on fine tissue paper and traditional hand-made Japanese paper or velvety scratched drypoint lines layered with texture and colour. Painted prints or printed paintings, the results are multi-layered impressions.

Recent work seeks to combine the printed mark with painting and drawing via collage. These

mixed media pieces continue Ruth’s fascination with the ancient landscapes of the South West and Bristol Channel seascapes.

Early in her career she was short listed for the Emerging Artist award at the Royal West of England Academy Open exhibition and won the Society of Graphic Fine Art & Best Work in Colour, and has gone on to have work shown in prestigious print exhibitions at the Atkinson Gallery in Somerset and The Shire Hall in Stafford and in open competitions at such well-regarded venues as the Royal West of England Academy, Black Swan Arts in Frome and with the Society of Painter Printmakers.

In recent years she has completed a year long printmaking scholarship at the University of the West of England and has undertaken a residency at Lizard Point Lighthouse resulting in exhibitions in Helston and London. She was selected for Stroud Museum in the Park’s ‘Material Flow’ exhibition and Printfest 2022 in Ulverston, Cumbria.

She exhibits widely in both group and solo shows. She lives and works in Bristol and is a member of Spike Print Studio.
